Owner ‘difficult’ claim made following Steve Cooper Leicester City verdict

Leicester City are in ‘safe hands’ with Steve Cooper, says former Foxes striker Alan Smith.

Cooper is set to lead the club back into the Premier League after agreeing a three-year deal to succeed Enzo Maresca and take charge at the King Power Stadium. He wasted no time in working with the City hierarchy on a plan to strengthen his squad for their return to the top flight.

The 44-year-old has recent experience of managing a club in the Premier League and then stayed there after achieving the feat with Nottingham Forest. Cooper led them to promotion from the Championship and then to a 16th-place finish in the 2022/23 season when Leicester were relegated.

This was his only full season in charge of Forest before owner Evangelos Marinakis replaced him with Nuno Espirito Santo. “I think it’s a good appointment from Leicester to appoint Steve Cooper,” said Smith, speaking to Prime Casino. “I think he is a good manager.

“It was difficult for him at Forest. I think it is quite difficult under the owner (Evangelos Marinakis). Maybe Nuno (Espirito Santo) is finding that out now, but he did very well to get Forest into the Premier League and keep them in the first season back. I think he is a talented coach.

“I think Leicester are in safe hands there. I think they suit each other. I think it’s a very good meeting.”
