The village that becomes a ‘festival’ during Wimbledon tennis prompting families to move

Wimbledon Village is gearing up for another great summer of tennis and residents say the anticipation in the otherwise sleepy neighborhood is “electric”. The south London borough is already awash in purple, white and green ahead of the world’s most famous tennis tournament, which kicks off on Monday (July 1).

In what is tipped to be Andy Murray’s final year playing at Wimbledon, whether he is fit enough to play his first tour match on Tuesday (July 2) or join brother Jamie in the doubles, local business is going above and beyond and beyond adorning its windows. with strawberries, rockets and balls. Mariana Walsh, who has lived in Wimbledon for several years, said: “I know some people don’t like it because it’s busy, but we enjoy the vibe, the party atmosphere.

“Sometimes, when the sun comes out, it reminds me that I’m on vacation. We’re going to go, it creates this feeling of belonging. I don’t even know how to describe it. The evening will be crazy as all the young people will be out in the pub from the road, there will be live music.

Another resident, Debbie Knight, added: “I love it, I think it’s great. It’s very hectic and busy, everyone seems to be excited and putting in a bit more effort.”

While many households enjoy being in the limelight, living near and attending tennis’ most famous venue – officially known as the All England Club – how busy Wimbledon gets isn’t for everyone, some families taking the opportunity to escape for two weeks. Susan Cusack, a keen member of the Save Wimbledon Park campaign group, said: “A lot of locals rent their houses and move out, but I like the noise and will go to Wimbledon.”

Local pubs and shops are expecting big profits and increased traffic, with some even expanding their locations to keep up with demand. Phillip Daly, manager of the Dog and Fox Hotel & Pub, told MyLondon that they have added two new bars, an additional outdoor kitchen and a new seafood menu based on the annual successes of being a destination for those attending tennis.

He said: “What is Wimbledon? The biggest sporting event that has the most spectators coming from abroad, so yeah, it’s great. It’s great to have so many people and be busy, busy, busy. It’s a big boost for us and the economy. Pubs have been really tough lately so it’s a welcome change.”
