Kevin Sinfield among 14,000 runners in Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon honoring rugby icon

The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon was held for the second time in 2024, with the rugby star’s friend Kevin Sinfield once again playing a big part in the day’s events.

Kevin Sinfield led tributes to friend Rob Burrow as Leeds once again hosted a marathon in honor of the rugby league star.

Former Leeds Rhinos star Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2019, since which he and Sinfield have raised substantial sums for charity. The pair received CBEs in the 2023 New Year’s honors list, months after the first Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon took place.

The inaugural race in 2023 featured an emotional moment for the friends, with Sinfield carrying Burrow across the finish line. He later spoke of the “incredible” experience with his former teammate.

After more than 10,000 participants crossed the starting line in 2023, the 2024 edition brought together around 14,000 runners in Leeds. Sinfield addressed the crowd before the start at Headingley and was expected to meet Burrow at the finish line.

“It’s great to see Rob with us, Lindsey and the family,” Sinfield said at the start line, according to Leeds Live. “We know they’re at the heart of this – let’s destroy it!

Speaking to This Morning after the 2023 race, Sinfield spoke about the experience. “It was an incredible day raising money, 12,500 people running in Rob’s name… and the first time we’ve been able to do a big event together and run under the banner of friendship and it was a brilliant day, ” he said.

“The marathon was one of the most important and special events we’ve done and it meant so many things to so many people,” added Burrow. “But for me it was about friendship and crossing the finish line with my colleague, Kev will live with me forever and has created a platform to raise funds and awareness for MND charities and I hope the next one will be the same memorable.”
