Why Liverpool’s Anthony Gordon transfer talks failed after Newcastle ‘wanted the Reds player’

Liverpool have rejected a bid which could have seen Anthony Gordon make a sensational move to Anfield.

According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have been in contact with Newcastle, with the Magpies willing to sell their star player as they try to comply with the Premier League’s financial rules. However, talks are said to have broken down following a bid from the St James’ Park club.

The report claims the proposed deal would have seen Jarell Quansah move in the opposite direction. However, Liverpool decided it wasn’t right for them.

The defender has enjoyed a breakout season at Anfield in 2023. /24, making 33 appearances in all competitions.

It is suggested talks could resume at the weekend, although Liverpool have not made a counter offer following talks. Newcastle must sell before June 30 to comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Failure to do so could risk a points deduction, as Everton and Nottingham Forest found out last season. Had a deal been agreed for Gordon, a medical in Leipzig would have been mooted, with the 23-year-old currently away with England at Euro 2024.
