Man stabbed as police arrest teenage suspect

A 70-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed on a motorway footbridge.

Police were called to Edge Hall Road in Orrell, Wigan, shortly before 4pm yesterday, June 27, following reports of a stabbing. The victim is reportedly receiving specialist treatment in hospital. An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the stabbing. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Chief Inspector Glen Rees of Greater Manchester Police said: “We understand the shock and concern this incident will cause in the community, but I want to make it clear to everyone that we are doing everything we can to find those responsible.

“Since the incident, we have this morning arrested a key suspect and he remains in our custody for questioning. I would also like to pass on our thanks and sincere thanks to members of the public who attended the scene immediately afterwards to help treat the victim.

“Our dedicated officers remain on patrol in the area to provide reassurance and visible support. I would encourage anyone with information to come forward and tell us. This can be done by calling 101 quoting incident 2319 of 27/06/2024.”
