Cyndi Lauper faces mixed reaction at Glastonbury as crowd exits

Cyndi Lauper’s Glastonbury concert caused quite a stir on social media, with some fans at Worthy Farm choosing to leave their set early. The iconic singer of ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’ graced the Pyramid Stage on Saturday afternoon, kicking things off with her 80’s hit ‘The Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough’.

But she was hit by some initial microphone issues that seemed to be resolved by the end of her act. The American pop legend briefly stepped aside mid-show to attend to ‘a little thing’, but returned to deliver a powerful rendition of ‘I Drove All Night’, winning a round of applause.

Addressing the Glastonbury crowd, Cyndi expressed her joy at performing and extended “Happy Pride to those who celebrate” to those who celebrate. However, after she performed her anthem ‘Girls Just Want To Have Fun’, there was a noticeable shift away from festivals from her performance.

A Mirror journalist at the scene spotted Cyndi looking quite despondent as the crowd thinned out. Before singing her famous song, she made an emotional statement to the Worthy Farm crowd: “It’s time for world leaders to recognize that women make up half the population,” the Mirror reports.

During her performance of the iconic hit “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” Cyndi Lauper’s performance took a turn for the better as the audio issues were resolved. She took the moment to address feminist movements, specifically recalling the 2017 marches in which women donned pink “pussyhats” in the US.

Speaking to the audience, Cyndi shared: ‘I was watching TV and I saw all these women from all over the world marching with some pink hats on and… my friend called me and said ‘come out the hell out of there (Cyndi)’ so I did, I went out and I saw the signs that said Girls I Just Want You to Have Basic Rights, that’s right.”

She continued to talk about her commitment to gender equality, announcing her partnership with the Girls Just Want To Have Fundamental Rights Fund on Saturday. The fund supports global organizations that help women of all ages secure their reproductive rights and autonomy over their bodies.
