Nottingham Forest shock John Egan free transfer with Sheffield United captain, 31, yet to sign new deal

Egan, 31, is a free agent and recovering from injury at the Blades – who could offer him a new deal.

The club captain managed just seven appearances in all competitions last season.

The Republic of Ireland international has been dogged by a foot injury which has prevented him from helping Sheffield United during a difficult season.

The Blades are back in the Championship after finishing bottom of the Premier League table.

Egan moved to Bramall Lane in 2018 from Brentford and rose to prominence.

The defender has amassed a total of eight goals and five assists in 224 appearances.

Nottingham Forest narrowly avoided relegation but ultimately stayed in the Premier League for the second year in a row after returning to the top flight in 2022.

Forest finished 17th in the table six points clear of the drop zone.

Sheffield United, on the other hand, have endured a torrid season which has seen them lose 28 out of 38 league games.

Chris Wilder’s side also set the record for most goals conceded in the Prem.

Premier League teams deducted points and others at risk

Sheffield United took the ball into their own net 104 times.
