Few winners, but Birmingham stocks are among them

Gains were fairly thin on Friday in our Birmingham and Alabama stocks report, but local stocks certainly came out on top.

Birmingham-based First US Bancshares led the way with a 3.3 percent gain. Medical Properties Trust rose nearly 2%. ProAssurance gained .5%.

Warrior Met Coal fell near the bottom with a loss of 3.3%.

Overall, US stocks ended another winning week with a quiet and mixed finish.

The S&P 500 rose 0.2% on Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.3 percent and the Nasdaq Composite fell less than 0.1 percent.

A prolonged parade of strong earnings reports from Gen Digital and other companies helped support the market.

Stocks were on track for higher gains in the morning, but retreated after a disappointing US consumer sentiment report. The report suggests that US households are raising their inflation expectations. That helped Treasury yields rise ahead of next week’s much-anticipated inflation updates.
