Woman raped by stranger in Twickenham Park in broad daylight

A woman was raped by a stranger in broad daylight in a park in south-west London.

The woman, in her 40s, reported the attack at around 8am on Monday in Marble Hill Park, just off Richmond Road in Twickenham.

A 28-year-old man was arrested by the Met Police on suspicion of rape later the same day at an address in Lambeth. He was charged on Wednesday.

Scotland Yard said there were other people in the park at the time of the attack who have not yet come forward and appealed for anyone in the area to get in touch.

Detective Inspector Simon Sherlock from the South West Command Unit said: “The protection of women and girls is an absolute priority for the Met and the woman who was attacked is being fully supported by specialist officers.

“We are conducting a thorough investigation, but we are also asking for the public’s help. We know there were people in the park at the time of the attack, but even if you didn’t witness the incident, you may still have vital information.

“I am appealing for anyone who was in and around Marble Hill Park around 8am on Monday, August 21 to come forward.

“You can always call Crimestoppers if you don’t want to give your name, but whatever you decide, please get in touch and let us know what you know.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information are asked to call police on 101 or contact via Twitter @MetCC. Please quote CAD 2537/21AUG. To give anonymous information, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online at crimestoppers-uk.org.
