Having lived in Barnet for nearly a quarter of a century, I am disappointed to find that the only way I can vote for anyone at this election is to turn up.

None of the major parties want to talk about the elephant in the room: BREXIT!

The Labor Party tells us they can “make Brexit work” – they can’t and won’t.

The Conservative Party continues to feed us fake good economic news reminiscent of the “you never had it so good” era.

Let’s have some truth:

Brexit is the driver behind the cost of living crisis;

Brexit is why our environmental standards now allow effluents into our rivers and beaches;

Brexit is why any trip abroad is becoming increasingly difficult and miserable.

Our young people have been robbed of the educational opportunities offered by Erasmus, while our older generation have had their idyllic retirement plans in Spain, Italy and Greece destroyed.

The biggest problems we face as a community are global in nature: the environmental crisis we face can not be solved by building walls around our island – we must work with our European neighbors if we are all to have any effect on this emergency.

If elected, I will ensure that at least one voice in our parliament holds our Brexit-loving Prime Minister to account as the chaos continues to unfold.

Here’s an overview of the contest and statements from five other candidates: Mark Durrant – Liberal Democrat, David Farbey – Green Party, Hamish Haddow – Reform Britain, Dan Tomlinson – Labor and Theresa Villiers – Conservative.

Barnett Post The Independent reached out to Kay Lauer for a statement, but did not hear back.

Note: Barnett Post approached all candidates for ward seats and gave them the opportunity to make a 250-word statement. The purpose of these statements is to give voters the clearest possible understanding of the prospects of the people they are asking for their support. In doing so, we acknowledge that some views have caused me offense and upset, and we apologize if this is the case.

Independent news outlets like ours – which report for the community without wealthy backers – are under threat of closure, turning Britain’s cities into news deserts.

The public they serve know less, understand less, and can do less.
