The M1 lorry is setting fire to live traffic updates today as the motorway is completely shut down

Traffic was brought to a complete standstill on the motorway near Rotherham.

The M1 southbound is blocked between J32 for the M18 junction and J33 for Catcliffe following a lorry fire.




Footage from highway cameras shows vehicles queuing bumper-to-bumper for miles behind. It is currently unclear when stationary traffic will be moved or when the road will reopen. Yorkshire Live contacted National Highways for more information.

All lanes are reopening and traffic is back to normal

All lanes have reopened and traffic has returned to normal on the M1 southbound near Rotherham after earlier delays caused by a lorry fire.

Our travel partner Inrix reports: “M1 Southbound closed, stationary traffic due to lorry fire from J33 A630 (Catcliffe / Sheffield / Rotherham) to J32 M18 (M18 interchange). Congestion to A631 towards Whiston. Detour – via A630. “

A lorry has burst into flames on the M1, causing long delays for drivers.

The fire brought traffic to a complete standstill on the M1 southbound near Rotherham earlier this afternoon. A video of the fire, which was first reported at around 3pm on Saturday (June 29), shows flames engulfing the cab of a lorry as plumes of black smoke billow into the sky.

Diversion route in place

National Highways has shared the following diversion route:

Road users are advised to follow the solid triangle detour symbol on road signs.

  • M1 southbound exit at J33.
  • At the roundabout at the end of the slip, take the 3rd exit onto the A630 (Sheffield Parkway).
  • Continue along the A630 for approx. 3 miles to junction with A57.
  • At the junction with the A57, turn left and continue along the A57 for approx. 6 miles to junction with M1 J31.
  • At the roundabout take the 3rd exit to join the M1 south at J31.

Firefighters are treating the fire

A National Highways spokesman said: “The M1 in South Yorkshire is closed southbound between J33 (Catcliffe) and J32 (M18) due to a lorry fire.

“Emergency services including South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue are in attendance. National Highway Traffic Officers are also on site helping to manage traffic.”
