Foreign Ministry warns Spanish tourists with €600 fine for common mistake

Spanish tourists have been warned that if they’re heading abroad soon and need to use a taxi, there’s one common mistake they’ll want to avoid.

In Spain, it is compulsory for taxis and private hire companies to be registered. However, a lesser-known taxi regulation could lead to fines for tourists. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs warns that using taxi services without a license can lead to fines of up to 600 euros for passengers.

For this reason, those who need taxi services in Spain should book in advance, rather than hailing a taxi on the spot. This goes for anyone, whether you need a taxi to and from the airport or around the area where you are staying.

The government body states on its website: “Use only official registered or licensed taxis or reputable transport companies that you recognise. Licensing regulations differ in Spain and in some cities advance booking is required”.

“Passengers caught using unlicensed taxi services are liable for fines of up to €600. Make sure you book your taxi or airport transfer through an authorized company.”

GoGuides states that taxis in Spain are licensed and equipped with clearly visible meters. However, some drivers may claim a flat rate – often an inflated amount – claiming their meter is not working. Others might take a longer route to increase the total fare.

To avoid this, they say: “Check that the meter is on before entering the taxi. If the driver claims it doesn’t work, politely decline and find another taxi. You can call the hotel to get an estimated cost of travel to avoid being overcharged.”
