The new foot and cycle lane in Nuneaton town center has been suspended

Plans for a new foot and cycle track on the edge of Nuneaton town center have been put on hold. It was proposed to open Abbey Gardens – the large grassy area on Corporation Street just before the Dandelion Fountain.

In September 2022, development work began on the grassy area on Corporation Street and at the time the county council said work was due to start last spring.

But no work has started. CoventryLive asked the county council for an update and in a statement it was revealed that the project was actually put on the market last year.

A spokesman for Warwickshire County Council said: “Last year a decision was made to pause work on the Abbey Green cycleway until there was funding and a project available to complete a cycle corridor in north-west Nuneaton , to connect Tuttle Hill with downtown. via Abbey Green Funding is still being sought for this work to date, but the scheme is due to be reviewed in September.

It’s not the first planned downtown traffic project to be put on hold. Last year the county council confirmed that planned £21m of roadworks in the town center were being reviewed.

As a result, planned work on Corporation Street – close to the Abbey Green cycle path – has been frozen. Only the Wheat Street project will go forward.
