Croydon homicide detectives given more time to question pair after human remains found in park

Detectives have been given extra time to question two people arrested on suspicion of murder after human remains were found in a south London park.

The gruesome discovery was made last Tuesday in Rowdown Fields in New Addington, Croydon.

A 44-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman were detained on Saturday and remain in custody.

The Metropolitan Police said further arrest warrants had been granted.

A post-mortem examination took place on Sunday, but the force has yet to reveal the sex, age or ethnicity of the victim.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the Specialist Crime Command investigation, said the remains were those of a single person but could not yet be formally identified.

He added: “I understand the significant concern this discovery has caused local people and I want to thank the community for their patience.

“I can confirm that our work at the location is complete and we believe the remains found are those of a single person.

“While we cannot officially identify the victim at this time, my team is working around the clock to do so. Their requests have made significant progress and I will provide a further update as soon as possible.

“We stay in touch with partners and members of the local community. I am grateful to them for their support.”
