Several Super League teams have taken steps to strengthen their squads for the 2025 season in the break for the mid-season international against France. However, no side has made as many waves in the transfer market as Wakefield Trinity.

Wakefield are top of the Championship table with 12 wins from their opening 12 games and, under new owner Matt Ellis, have big plans for the future.

For so many years, Wakefield have been relegation contenders, locked in an annual battle to secure their place in Super League. However, they now seem determined to compete with the league’s top teams once they return to the top flight.

Wakefield have already made four significant signings. England Internationals Tom Johnstone and Mike McMeeken were the first deals to be announced ahead of the 2025 season. They will be joined by Olly Russell and Cam Scott, who were announced this week.

However, the club’s head of recruitment has revealed that Wakefield’s 2025 squad is far from complete and several offers are currently in the works.

In an interview with the club’s YouTube channel, Wakefield’s manager of recruitment and salary cap, Ste Mills, discussed where the club intend to go following their eye-catching recruitment in recent weeks.

Mills spoke about the club’s ambitious plans to break into the top four in Super League. To do this, he believes the club is still four or five players from where they would like to be. Wakefield fans can therefore still look forward to more transfer business in the coming weeks. Mills said:

“We’re excited, we’ve got a lot more to announce, we’re still four or five players away from what we’ve already secured that hasn’t been announced and we’re still working on a few things.

“It’s still exciting times for Wakefield, obviously a few signings from our current squad yet to be announced, with Thomas already there and obviously Caleb (Uele) too, so a few more and Kai.

“So a few more of them and we feel like we’re building a really nice team for next year, so more of them and we feel like we’re building a really nice team for next year, so it’s an exciting time for everybody.

Discussing extensions for Doyle and Rodwell, Mills believes both have the potential to continue to improve and become players who can feature regularly for Wakefield Trinity in Super League. He is delighted the club have been able to tie both men down to extended offers. Mills said:

Yes, I saw Tom Doyle from afar. I always thought he was a tough competitor. He’s one of those players once you get into your environment that you really appreciate. I think he’s actually gone to different levels this year and I still think he has levels to grow even higher and further.

Talk about his passing game, it’s as sharp as we’ve ever seen it now since we’ve been here. I feel like he’s going to keep getting better and better, so I’m really excited to tie him down to a longer-term deal.

“And on Kai, Kai is the same. I always knew what Kai Rodwell was going to be, it’s a bit different when you’re waiting for him to come through and you’re hoping they’re going to be what you saw in Australia, but Kai was like that and that’s it. something else.” Mills explained.

“It was a quick and easy decision, Kai likes it here like everyone else, we get it, we all buy into the project and he never once thought about not taking the deal, so it was an easy one for us. .”
