Castleford Tigers forward George Lawler returned to action yesterday for the first time since suffering a brain bleed when he played 60 minutes for the club’s reserves against Bradford Bulls’ reserves.

It’s been a whirlwind few months for the former Hull KR man who was confirmed to have suffered a stroke in the middle of the night in April, leaving him with a small bleed on the brain and therefore obviously unable to play.

At the time, the club released the following statement: “Castleford Tigers can confirm that George Lawler suffered a seizure overnight at home and was taken to hospital.

“The scans showed that George has a small bleed on the brain. He is awake and feeling well. He will spend the weekend in hospital for observation and will undergo further tests and specialist involvement.”

That recovery went well and Lawler returned to training earlier this month and is now back playing, albeit with reservations, but wants to be selected by Craig Lingard for Castleford’s game against St Helens on Friday night.

Castleford Tigers have fielded a strong reserves squad which includes several first team talents including Muizz Mustapha, Luis Johnson and of course George Lawler. The Tigers won 42-16, but the biggest cheer of the day was definitely for Lawler as he left the field.

Addressing fans in a video posted on the club’s social media, the 28-year-old said: “It’s nice to see, we’ve had a lot of love from the Rugby League community, especially the Cas fans. Everyone at the club was fantastic and it was nice to have them cheering when I left at the end.”

He has made 50 appearances for the Tigers since his move from Hull KR, but his return to the pitch yesterday was a big occasion and one that he hopes will allow him to kick on and help the club in the second half of the season.

Of his performance, Lawler explained, “It feels great. It’s nice to get some miles back on my legs and hopefully I’ll be picked next week.

“The more minutes now, the easier it will be to get the minutes back when I play the first team, so I really enjoyed today and it was a good performance.

The news that George Lawler has been named in the Tigers reserve team has been met with great positivity from fans who have welcomed his return. If it turns up on Friday night then the same heat will be seen at the Totally Wicked Stadium where the Tigers take on St Helens.
