Red Sox vs. Padres for June 30th

The Red Sox’ June numbers were slowed by two losses to the slugging Padres, who became the first team to take a series from the Sox since the Orioles did so in late May.

Josh Winckowski has the ball for Sunday’s finale as Boston tries to prevent a sweep. The Sox haven’t faced the sweep since early April, also against Baltimore.

The Padres will move on to right-hander Matt Waldron, which means the knuckleball will return to Fenway Park. Waldron is the only regular practitioner of the pitch in the majors, although he does not rely on it as his primary pitch like past players such as Tim Wakefield.

Notes: San Diego outscored Boston 20-3 in the first two games of the series, hitting six home runs. The Sox are on a three-game losing streak for the first time since mid-May. “It’s a good lineup, and they connect the bats really, really well — putting up big numbers,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Hopefully with (Winckowski) we can keep them down and go offensively.” … Waldron has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last nine starts. He has a 1.95 ERA during that span. … Red Sox catcher Connor Wong has a 15-game hitting streak going into Sunday’s game.
