Motorists face 4 miles of diversions as main route Coalville is closed from July 1

Motorists face more than 4 miles of diversions when a major Coalville route is closed. A six-week travel suspension warning was also issued.

The warning is in place for motorists planning to use Standard Hill from Monday July 1 as a section of the main route, which links Hugglescote to Coalville, will be closed. The closure affects a section of the road between St Marys Lane and Frearson Road.

Leicestershire County Council implemented the closure for public safety reasons and issued a warning. A number of diversions have also been created, stretching for more than 4 miles.

The road closure is in place to allow Jelsons Homes to install a new culvert and widen the carriageway around Standard Hill for its new development of several hundred homes. It will soon be joined by another 100 homes in Standard Hill, on the former Jacks Ices factory, despite traffic concerns.

Leicestershire County Council said the nature of the work, which includes the installation of new utility connections, meant Standard Hill would be a “route of no access” for emergency services. However, pedestrian access to the area will be maintained.

Diversions created to cope with the road closure will take motorists along Ashburton Road and Central Road in Hugglescote before joining Belvoir Road and Ashby Road in Coalville and finally Ashby Road, Swannington Road and Wash Lane in Ravenstone . It is a diversion that applies in both directions and totals 4.2 miles.

The closure is set for six weeks. More information about the closure and diversions can be found on the one.network website.
