Five Cornish bakeries win World Pastry Awards 2024

Five Cornish bakeries have come out on top at an international pastry awards ceremony. La Liste has announced the winners of its 2024 Pastry Awards

The awards gave recognition to more than 3,000 patisserie shops it considers to be the “crème de la crème” – 199 of those pastry hot spots were in the UK. Speaking about the competition, Time Out explained: “La Liste is a food guide that prides itself on recommending the best hotels and restaurants around the globe. Now, it has influenced the world of pastry.”

The long-standing list features five Cornish bakeries: Baker Tom’s in Falmouth, St Agnes Bakery in St Agnes, St Ives Bakery in St Ives, Da Bara St Mawes Bakery near the east side of Falmouth harbor and St Mawes Bakery. Here’s everything we know about each bakery.

Baker Tom’s

The award-winning bakery is run by Tom Hazzledine, who first opened the business in 2007. Tom’s passion for traditional baking and enthusiasm for new flavors has earned him major popularity, leading him to have three stores in 2024 and a fleet of vans, delivering bread to businesses all over the world. south west England.

St Agnes Bakery

Opened in 1905, St Agnes Bakery is one of the oldest bakeries in Cornwall, the patisserie shared: “We are so proud to be one of the oldest bakeries in the country still operating from its original location. The joy of baking is deeply rooted in both our own memories and childhood experiences.”

The patisserie aims to bake all their breads, scones, Cornish scones and giant sausage rolls using “honest methods, tried and tested recipes and only the highest quality ingredients”, as revealed by their mums.

St Ives Bakery

St Ives Bakery is a unique independently owned and self-proclaimed bakery. The patisserie has a wide variety of artisan breads, including traditional bread, sourdough, long-fermented bread, focaccia and a range of delicious pastries.

Da Bara St Mawes Bakery

Da Bara first opened its original site, IQ Cafe, in November 2019, but has since moved to its Indian Queens flagship bakery on Grampound Road. However, the St Mawes cafe is the newest of our cafe locations and opened in May 2021. At this cafe, they offer Da Bara ice cream, which is blended by ‘talented chefs’, as well as fantastic breakfasts and light lunches .

St Mawes Bakery is a unique patisserie that even delivers fresh Cornish cakes to your door. According to its flagship website, the bakery shared, “Over the years, the store has sold everything from our own homemade ice cream to cigarettes. Now you’ll find our delicious Cornish cakes, tastier cakes and a good cup of coffee to wash them down. “
