Kent man, 71, lifts 91kg in regional powerlifting record

A 71-year-old man from Sevenoaks has broken regional records in his first powerlifting competition. Now a sports enthusiast, Brent Gebbie broke the record three times while bench pressing in the South East Powerlifting Spring Divisional.

Brent Gebbie went all out bench pressing 81kg, 85kg and then 90kg. Brent’s age group record was set in 2019 with an incredible 80kg.

Before being introduced to powerlifting in 2021, Brent never thought he would. He joined Body Mentors and started training that year.

The retired IT manager said: “Initially I wasn’t sure about the competition when it was first suggested as it wasn’t something I had considered or tried before. However, with Will and John’s encouragement, I decided to go for it. Once I started my 12-week training program and could see my progress, I became more focused and committed.

“The competition exceeded all my expectations – the atmosphere, the encouragement of other competitors, judges and spectators helped my performance – which I was very pleased with!”

Next time, Brent has his sights set on breaking the deadlift and squat records. Body Mentors co-founder Will Gorringe, “Seeing Brent’s incredible progress in powerlifting, we decided to check out the records for his age and weight class. Quickly realizing its potential, I pitched the idea to him – and with some encouragement, he was keen to give it a try.”
