Man charged with murder of police sergeant shot dead in Croydon custody

A man has been charged with the murder of Sergeant Matt Ratana, the Metropolitan Police officer shot dead in Croydon custody last September.

Louis de Zoysa, 23, of Park Road, Banstead, Surrey, was also charged with possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition, the Metropolitan Police said.

Mr Ratana, 54, died of his injuries in the early hours of September 25 last year.

Since the incident, de Zoysa has remained in hospital in a stable, non-life-threatening condition and under police guard.

Scotland Yard said recent changes in his condition led the Crown Prosecution Service to feel comfortable charging him in connection with the incident.

De Zoysa will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday via video link.

Mr Ratana’s partner and son have been informed.
