Former Liverpool goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi has shed light on the discussions with Brendan Rodgers that led to his departure from Anfield. Gulacsi initially arrived on loan in 2007 before securing a permanent move a year later.

The Hungary international spent half a decade at Liverpool before packing up for Red Bull Salzburg in 2013. Despite wearing the red shirt for six seasons, the goalkeeper has never made it to the pitch for a first-team match.

During Brendan Rodgers’ tenure, Gulacsi left Liverpool and the now 31-year-old has reflected on his exit. With over 300 games at RB Leipzig, Gulacsi is certain that Liverpool’s departure was the right one.

“When you see how Wojciech Szczesny at Arsenal or David de Gea at Atletico took their chances and took them, it was never completely out of the question for me,” Gulacsi told Goal, reflecting on the fight for the number one title of Liverpool.

“As a third goalkeeper, though, it only works if something happens to the two in front of you, whatever it was. We weren’t hoping for him to get injured, of course. Pepe (Reina) was playing at a high level. It was very difficult to get past him.

“Also, in England they usually go for older, experienced goalkeepers as a number two. It was difficult to go up the rankings. Rodgers became a manager and he wanted to look at all the goalkeepers first. He wanted keep me as number three.

“Pepe was injured a lot again, so he must have been on the bench 15, 16 times. After the season, my advisor at the time spoke to Rodgers and said, “Peter is now 23 years old and entering the last year of his contract. ‘.

“There are exactly three ways for him: he leaves the club and becomes a clear No. 1 somewhere, he extends his contract and goes on loan for two years, or the contract is extended and he becomes Liverpool’s permanent No. 2.”

“Rodgers has made it quite clear that it will be difficult with the last two options, but they won’t put any obstacles in my way.”
