New 12 pitch GRT community site in Coventry

IN CELEBRATION of Gypsy, Roma and Traveler History Month (GRTHM), Rooftop Housing Group has announced the development of Rosamund Close, a new 12-bed site in Coventry.

This scheme exemplifies Rooftop’s ongoing commitment to supporting Gypsy, Roma and Traveler (GRT) communities by providing culturally appropriate housing and comprehensive services that encourage inclusive and thriving communities.

Located on Siskin Drive, Rosamund Close is the result of significant collaboration with Coventry City Council.

With funding support from Homes England and Coventry City Council, Rooftop transformed a derelict travel site into a modern community centre.

Each of the 12 pitches includes a parking area for two vehicles, a living room with kitchen, bathroom and utility design, as well as a rear garden with a shed.

In addition, the site offers a shared play area for children. The first GRT families are expected to move in by the end of 2024.

Boris Worrall, Group Chief Executive of Rooftop, said: “I am proud of the work Rooftop is doing for the GRT community, which too often remains disadvantaged and discriminated against.

“As a housing provider, we have experience in developing and managing sites for GRT communities.

“We believe in creating a home and community where all people and families can thrive, regardless of their background or lifestyle.”

Rooftop worked with Worcestershire-based Speller Metcalfe, the main contractor undertaking the work, to ensure the project met the highest standards.

“Mark Eaton, Life Director at Speller Metcalfe, added: “We have a long history of successful developments in partnership with Rooftop and we are delighted to see this extend to a multitude of different residential developments.

“The Siskin Drive project will be a positive addition to Coventry, providing a suitable site for the well-established Gypsy, Roma and Traveler community.”

Earlier this year, during a national measles outbreak, Rooftop, in partnership with a local family doctor, arranged for a mobile vaccination unit to provide on-site health checks and measles vaccinations at another Rooftop site GRT from Solihull.

The scheme resulted in seven people receiving crucial measles vaccinations, demonstrating Rooftop’s commitment to providing a safe living environment and promoting the wellbeing of GRT communities.
