Greater Manchester steps up fight against homelessness – with global commitment | News

The city-region became one of the few Vanguard cities

Greater Manchester has stepped up its fight against homelessness – by signing a global pledge.

It is now one of the few Vanguard cities in the entire world.

In January, the city-region pledged more than £7m of new funding over the next three years as part of stepped-up efforts to tackle the problem.

A complete end to homelessness in Greater Manchester was one of Burnham’s key campaign promises.

“Our epidemic of homelessness and rough sleeping is a key priority for me as mayor.”

The city-region will benefit from IGH’s guidance and support as it works alongside the other Vanguard cities to work together to address shared challenges.

“Make no mistake, the effort to address the humanitarian crisis that is our unsheltered and rough sleeping epidemic is a key priority for me as mayor.”

Dr David Walker, Bishop of Manchester, chairs Manchester Homelessness Partnership Council and said: “Poverty is a huge scourge on our society, something we cannot simply tolerate or ignore. I am grateful to be part of the work we are doing together to eradicate it.”

“The perspective of people who have been homeless themselves, and who share their knowledge and experience with us, is key to this approach. That said, we recognize that this is a national and global issue and are very open to learning from other cities’ experiences as well as sharing our own.”
