The date of publishing: June 30, 2024

Thanks to an outstanding display of teamwork and passion, a group of students from Oasis Academy Oldham have won the prestigious Micro-Tyco competition in Manchester.

The international challenge, organized by the “WildHearts Group”, facilitated a workshop that provides students with real-world business experience while inspiring a new generation of socially conscious entrepreneurs.

The winning team consisted of 10 students who used the sustainable development goal “life under water” to form their project.

Students used their initiative and prior knowledge of geography to devise a local, national and global plan to tackle pollution of our rivers and coral bleaching.

Their winning idea revolved around a river filter to eradicate plastic pollution and probiotic yogurt to help encourage coral growth.

The competition was hosted by Siemens, as students had to pitch their ideas against other schools.

A panel of four sustainable entrepreneurs awarded the students the winning trophy due to their “fierce dedication to sustainability” with “fantastic global and economic connections”.

Throughout the competition, the students received support from Siemens mentors.

“Our mentors helped us work as a team and bring all our ideas together,” said Year 10 Irene.

“They taught us how to overcome challenges and think strategically.”

Head of Humanities at Oasis Academy, Miss MacAdams, praised the students for their dedication and innovative thinking, saying: “The students have set an outstanding example for their peers.

“They have shown that through creativity, teamwork and a commitment to positive change, young people can achieve extraordinary things.”

“Winning the Micro-Tyco competition is incredibly rewarding.

“It’s not just about the recognition, it’s about the impact we can have together.”

“I am grateful for this opportunity and excited to continue our efforts in advancing sustainability.” added Emmanuela, from Year 8.
