Summer cost of living payments update in July to £550 to introduce bank accounts

Special summer cost of living payments will hit UK bank accounts in July as households are put on alert for a cash surge. The money is paid to some of the worst households by local councils through the Household Support Fund (HSF).

People who think they qualify for extra help can now apply for support payments and, if their applications are successful, they can go into their bank accounts during July. Local authorities have been given millions of pounds by the Government to help families and people in “financial hardship”.

Many councils will offer cash grants to those deemed to need support to pay for things like food and energy. People should check their local council’s Household Support Fund page online for details of what is available to them.

The amount of cash payments depends on where you live. Some local authorities pay up to £550 to those deemed eligible.

In Birmingham, grants of £200 are available for those in hardship who have not received HSF support in the last 12 months. Applicants will likely need to demonstrate that they are struggling financially and in many cases will need to claim some form of means-tested benefit.

Birmingham City Council said: “(We) will be handing out grants of up to £200 to households in Birmingham who are currently experiencing financial difficulties.
