A massive street party took place in Falmouth, bringing Cornish people together to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

The third day of celebrations saw hundreds of children and families eating picnics on a long table that occupied Market Street, each wearing jubilee wreaths and waving flags.

The event ran from 1pm to 4pm and is one of more than 80 events to be held across the Duchy over the long bank holiday weekend.

Grace, six, and Ariel, five, said: “We’re here to celebrate the queen because she’s been a queen for a long time. It’s very funny”.

Bryher, 6, said: “I like it here because everyone is here and we have a street party and it’s really good. My little brother likes it.

Jessica and Isabella, aged 8, said: “It was great with all the jugglers and all the soldiers. How they put everything into a big celebration”.

In partnership with Rowes bakery, attendees were treated to free refreshments and cakes with other families bringing their own picnics to enjoy on long tables.

The event included entertainment strolling through the streets and a choir group that sang at the start of the party.

Paul, from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, is in Cornwall for a week and attended the event with his family.

He said: “It’s absolutely incredible, I can’t believe how busy it is here, how many people there are, a real sense of community. There is a real sense of energy here. It’s just the best.”

Falmouth Town Manager Richard Gates said: “It was a windy, changeable day. There have been various activities in the last few days, we have 600 paper crowns, you can color them, we have flags that we give away. We have street performers, a choir.

“Platinum, you don’t get a platinum jubilee often if ever. We want everyone to come out and support him.”
