Anthony Gordon’s reaction to Liverpool transfer interest revealed as Newcastle ‘fears’ emerge

Liverpool appear to have no problem complying with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules. This is far from the case at other clubs, a fact that the Reds could take advantage of.

Every time you log onto social media, you’ll quickly find fans of other Premier League teams bemoaning the fact that their club isn’t allowed to post unlimited losses in pursuit of success. However, if football clubs were run as businesses in the real world, many would have already collapsed due to reckless transfer spending.

Despite being owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Newcastle are struggling to meet PSR requirements. The Athletic have been reporting on the behind-the-scenes activity at the club, with comments on Anthony Gordon sure to be of interest to Liverpool and its supporters.

Newcastle are claimed to have spent big on transfers when they knew potential problems were lurking, with the focus on offers for Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali in particular.

And it was precisely this behavior that made Newcastle have to sell players urgently. Recently returned Michael Edwards was a master at exploiting inefficiencies elsewhere in the transfer market when buying or selling during his previous time with Liverpool. The Magpies’ weakness allowed the Reds to make a play for Gordon.

Liverpool have made a ‘tentative’ inquiry to Newcastle, who have suggested Jarell Quansah is heading in the opposite direction. This is claimed to have been a non-starter for Liverpool, with Quansah held in high regard at Anfield.
