Man Utd thrash Spurs 4-0 to win FA Women’s Cup – latest reaction

Manchester United won their first major women’s trophy in a huge breakthrough moment for the club as they produced a dominant performance to comfortably beat Tottenham Hotspur in a rather one-sided FA Women’s Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester United fan Ella Toone’s wonderful strike into the top corner on the stroke of half-time gave Marc Skinner’s side a deserved lead, and veteran striker Rachel Williams’ header doubled their lead before two Spain’s Lucia Garcia to spark celebrations among United supporters.

The win will be a major boost for Skinner, who has been the source of discontent among United fans this season – with some taking ‘Skinner Out’ banners to matches earlier this term – especially with his contract up for renewal this summer, and as manger it was his first win in this game at the third attempt, after United lost 1-0 in last year’s final against Chelsea and a defeat in the 2017 game as Birmingham City manager.

United only reformed their senior women’s team six years ago after a 13-year absence from the game. They, like Tottenham, were only promoted to the WSL in 2019, and now have major objects for the first time.

For the wider English women’s game, this is the first time any club other than Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester City have lifted a major domestic trophy since 2014, and the first time none of those three teams have won the Women’s FA Cup since 2012.

Tottenham, who were in their first final, never got into gear and looked to be tiring towards the end of the game.
