Alan Browne confirms the decision which sparked transfer speculation for Coventry City and Sheffield United

Preston North End have confirmed that Alan Browne has left the club, sparking speculation as to where the player will end up amid speculation linking him with Coventry City.

A statement from the Lilywhites, posted on social media on Monday, said the cub captain and versatile forward had turned down the offer of a new three-year deal at Deepdale.

Browne has now played his last game for the club and is now an official free agent following the expiry of his previous contract with North End on Sunday 30 June.

The Sky Blues and Sheffield United have both been linked with the 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international this summer. However, CoventryLive understands no new signings are imminent. Meanwhile, an approach from Italians Salernitana was rejected by Preston in January.

The midfielder leaves Deepdale after 10 years with the club and 414 appearances. He also scored 45 times for the Lilywhites in that time.

The three-year deal for Browne was deemed the most lucrative in the club’s history as Ryan Lowe & Co sought to retain the services of the popular Irishman. But the longer the stalemate continued, the less likely it was that the midfielder would extend his stay at Deepdale.
