Sheffield Wednesday lead big clubs in pursuit of Charlie McNeill

Sheffield Wednesday are the most likely destination for Charlie McNeill following his release from Manchester United, say Manchester World.

Sheffield Wednesday are on the hunt for more signings after an impressive start to their summer recruitment process.

Ben Hamer, Max Lowe, Yan Valery, Svante Ingelsson and Jamal Lowe have all arrived at Hillsborough. It comes after manager Danny Rohl committed his future to the Owls long-term after an impressive start to life with the club.

Having avoided relegation, hopes are high for next season and more fresh faces will help them climb right up the Championship table.

A number of names have been linked, with Charlie McNeill among those said to be of interest to Sheffield Wednesday after his contract with Premier League giants Manchester United expires.

Now Manchester World have published a promising update on the Championship club’s pursuit.

They state that while McNeill is the subject of interest from Serie A pair Lazio and Torino, and MLS clubs LA Galaxy and Toronto have made offers, the 20-year-old is most likely to join on Wednesday as he is keen to to develop under Rohl.

Talks have been ongoing, but it remains to be seen if an agreement will be reached.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

The Rohl factor

If McNeill ends up joining Sheffield Wednesday amid interest from other big clubs, it is another clear example of how important Danny Rohl is to the Hillsborough outfit’s present and future.

Lazio and Torino are two illustrious Italian clubs who could offer McNeill another chance to make a name for himself in an elite league. As for LA Galaxy and Toronto, their interest could pave the way for the forward to make an attractive move to the States, where many English prospects have found success.

However, Wednesday look the most likely destination at the moment and Rohl is a manager McNeill can see himself developing.

He is also right. McNeill played at youth level and while things haven’t quite come together on the senior stage, he remains someone with great potential.

If he were to join the Owls, he could make a name for himself and find form in first-team football, especially with an astute boss like Rohl in charge, who has worked extensively with top young players over the years.

Could a striker leave?

The striker department has been the subject of much speculation in the early stages of the transfer window.

Sheffield Wednesday have only added the versatile Jamal Lowe to their attacking ranks as of now, but will be eyeing a new talisman. Many names have been linked, McNeill among them, but it seems these rumors could point to some departures.

If McNeill were to sign, he probably wouldn’t go in as the top man. You’d think he’d see action, but mostly off the bench, barring some starts here and there, maybe in cup games.

This leaves the top man spot still vacant, with none of Michael Smith, Callum Paterson or Bailey Cadamarteri likely to fill that mantle.

Transfer business has been impressive and it may not be long before more signings follow, but the forward position remains one of interest at Sheffield Wednesday.
