Rock N Roll Canada Day in Cornwall

Hundreds, if not thousands, have donned their best red and white and headed to Cornwall’s Lamouerux Park throughout the month for Rock N Roll Duty during the 2024 Canada Day celebrations.

Many were looking forward to the evening’s headline musical guest Kim Mitchell, who was due to take to the stage at 8.45pm before the fireworks brought things to a bang at 10pm.

In the afternoon, the Royal Canadian Air Force took to the skies, which elicited some “oohs” and “aahs” from everyone in the park. Mayor Justin Towndale said he came forward to do the RCAF flyover months ago and was glad to see the aircraft make an appearance.

“This is the greatest country in the world and I sincerely believe that. We’re lucky to live here, to celebrate Canada Day and I think the community put on a great program,” said Towndale. “We’ve got Kim Mitchell headlining later…throughout the day we’ve got great entertainment…it’s fantastic.”

Whether guests were there for Go For a Soda or ventured into the Cornwall Optimist Club’s beer garden, an array of food trucks and vendors were on site, including locally-owned favorites, to fill bellies hungry

Screams of laughter and excitement rang out from the Kids’ Zone shortly after noon as the little locals tested their talents at the Rhythm Room drum circle, crafts at the Home Depot workshop and bounced around the bouncy town.

“This is our annual trip (to Cornwall), but we don’t usually come on Canada Day,” Alicia Scott said as Garrett Scott got a lightning bolt tattoo. “We just came for the kids’ events, to walk around the park and have fun.”

In addition to Mitchell on the evening, a range of artists was set to take the band stage from 12:30pm until late, including Hoople Creek, Love & Boots, Mason Bruyere, The O’Neil’s, Shake the Tree, and Brothers Unplugged.

Current Canada Day committee members include Terry Muir, Amanda Brisson, Lorne Taillon, Adrian Bugelli, Dani Tedesco, Timothy Sage, Anne Bourdon, Lauren Gibeau, Tanya McVey. Several volunteers contributed to the event.

In addition to the sponsors who made the event possible and free for the public, Cornwall Transit provided shuttles on a special route to help residents get to the party.
