Euro 2024: Jota and Portugal progress on penalties to meet Konate’s France

Jota was a 65th-minute substitute for his nation in Frankfurt, although the match ended goalless after 90 minutes in a competitive contest.

In the ensuing extra-time, Liverpool’s number 20 played a crucial role in his side’s penalty win, producing a driving run into the area before being brought down.

Cristiano Ronaldo, however, saw his resulting spot-kick saved by goalkeeper Jan Oblak, meaning the tie went to a penalty shoot-out after it finished 0-0.

Portugal, however, won 3-0 on penalties, with stopper Diogo Costa saving all three of Slovenia’s efforts to earn their country progress.

Earlier in the day, Konate was an unused substitute for France, who booked their place in the last 16 with a 1-0 win over Belgium.

A Jan Vertonghen own goal five minutes from time settled the tie in Dusseldorf, with Portugal and France now set to meet on Friday night (20:00 BST) for a place in the semi-finals.
