Sheffield United enter the race for Liverpool target Anthony Patterson

Liverpool’s search for a reliable back-up goalkeeper will not be straightforward this summer, with Sheffield United now entering the race to sign Sunderland shot-stopper Anthony Patterson, who is believed to be on the Anfield club’s radar.

While Alisson Becker is the club’s undisputed number one, current student Caoimhin Kelleher is expected to leave the club this summer and questions still surround whether veteran Adrian will be offered a new deal when it expires in the coming months.

The Reds are therefore on the lookout for a new goalkeeper and Patterson, who has impressed since taking over as Sunderland’s first-choice goalkeeper midway through the 2021/22 League One season, has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs, including Liverpool. and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Now, however, recently relegated Sheffield United have entered the fray.

Sheffield United want Patterson as their new goalkeeper

Journalist Alan Nixon reports (via Patreon) that the Blades are now ready to table an ambitious bid of around £8m for Patterson’s signature, presenting a new hurdle for Liverpool.

Nixon suggests Sheffield United’s interest shows their determination to strengthen their squad ahead of their Championship campaign following relegation from the Premier League.

The Blades’ defensive woes, exemplified by a record 101 goals conceded in a single Premier League season, must be addressed, especially after signing Ivo Grbic failed to impress between the sticks and the former number one’s contract Wes Foderingham is due to expire. .

Wolves interested in Patterson and Kelleher

While the Yorkshire club’s interest appears to be serious, they are not the only suitors sniffing around.

Similarly, Wolves are eyeing Patterson as a potential replacement for Jose Sa, although other targets such as Aaron Ramsdale and Liverpool’s Kelleher remain under consideration.

Negotiations for Patterson will not be easy, however, as the Black Cats want more than £15m for his services.

Furthermore, Patterson signed a new long-term deal at the Stadium of Light just last summer, keeping him tied to the club until 2028.
