The ‘great weather’ Cornwall town has been named one of the UK’s top spots for seaside fun

A coastal town in Cornwall has been named one of the UK’s top spots for seaside fun – largely thanks to its “excellent” weather. It scored highly in a new ranking of holiday entertainment destinations for its museums, transport links and mild winters in new research.

The researchers looked at factors including the number of pubs, restaurants, museums, parks, zoos and aquariums, water and amusement parks, arcades, beach review scores and hotel prices. The number of Google searches, average temperature, average rainfall and local railway stations were also taken into account.

St Ives came second in the OLBG.com list, beaten to first place by Tenby in Pembrokeshire. Lyme Regis in Dorset was third and New Brighton in Wirral fourth, with Swanage in Dorset completing the top five.

OLBG said of St Ives: “St Ives is another renowned coastal town and has become known as the home of many artists. It ranks second here, primarily due to its excellent weather. St Ives has an oceanic climate and some of the mildest winters and warmest summers in the UK and Northern Europe.

“Of all the coastal cities analysed, it has the lowest annual rainfall (673 mm) and the fewest average rainy days per year (97). It also has the second highest number of museums (3.5 per 1,000 inhabitants), including Barbara. Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and St Ives Museum.

“It was also among the top ranked places for its beach rating score (4.8), Google searches (80,600 per year) and train stations (36 in Cornwall local authority).”
