Nine Leicester City players leave today as the wait continues for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

June 30 is not only the last day of football’s accounting period – it’s also the last day of players’ contracts, and that means nine players are officially saying goodbye to Leicester City even before they join Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Kelechi Iheanacho, Dennis Praet and Marc Albrighton will be off Leicester’s cards tomorrow, as well as half a dozen players from the development squad. Tawanda Maswanhise also leaves after making his senior debut in the FA Cup in January.

Center back Paul Appiah is another to come into his own. He signed from Aston Villa a few years ago and spent most of the season just finished on loan at non-league Maidstone United, playing a part in their historic run to the fifth round of the Cup FA.

Left back Shane Flynn announced his departure in May. He won the club’s development squad player of the season in 2021, but said he was “disappointed with the lack of treatment and the lack of support” from City while out injured over the past 18 months.

Defender Iestyn Hughes, goalkeeper Arlo Doherty and midfielder Jack Lewis are also released.

Then there are four players who have been offered new deals. Wilfred Ndidi has been heavily linked with a move to Everton, while Amani Richards has been linked with Brentford and QPR, and Chris Popov and Kian Pennant have offers on the table.

Jordan Blackwell wrote yesterday: “As it stands, Wilfred Ndidi is officially a Leicester City player for just a few days. There have been talks about a new contract, but while there’s no confirmed answer, he’s heading into free agency as of Monday.

“That doesn’t mean he won’t sign the deal. Far from it. Everton links have been dismissed by the Liverpool press, while the Marseille press say he would be too expensive for them to afford. City’s deal could be the best offer on the table.”

But the big ticket on June 30 remains the future of Dewsbury-Hall’s 25-year-old star midfielder – and with it a solution to Leicester’s demand to ensure they stay on the right side of profit and sustainability rules.

He had looked on course for Brighton and Hove Albion during the week, with Jakub Moder heading the other way, but that was thrown into the long grass when Chelsea – and their new boss Enzo Maresca – came in at the 11th hour and it is believed. to have reached a £30 million settlement.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: “Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Chelsea here we are! Player on his way to medical today ahead of contract signing. Deal until June 2026 for KDH at Chelsea, reunited with Enzo Maresca. Chelsea to pay fee around £30m to Leicester City after today’s final round of talks.”
