When Anthony Gordon and Luis Diaz transfers could be completed as Liverpool transfer window continues

Anthony Gordon remains a Newcastle United player after transfer talks with Liverpool broke down ahead of Sunday’s PSR deadline.

The Magpies found themselves in a position where they had to sell players before June 30 in order to comply with Premier League profit and sustainability rules. This prompted them to open talks with the Reds over a possible move for Gordon, although such talks broke down when Newcastle demanded Jarell Quansah as part of the deal.

Continuing to raise the desired funds by selling Yankuba Minteh to Brighton & Hove Albion and Elliott Anderson to Nottingham Forest, you’d be forgiven for thinking that Newcastle have already ended such a Gordon transfer saga as we head into July.

However, it is not that simple. The England international is a boyhood Liverpool fan, while reports in The Athletic and Telegraph on Monday suggested there is some concern in the Newcastle camp now that their winger’s head has been turned by the Reds’ interest.

As a result, it feels like we haven’t heard the end of the links between Liverpool and Gordon. With the transfer window remaining open until August 30, it threatens to be a continuing saga as a result.

A transfer could have been rushed through last week if terms were agreed, and he even reported that a medical had been booked for Gordon in Leipzig should the two clubs strike a deal to beat the deadline day PSR of June 30. But now there is no clock to force a quick resolution to the potential negotiations.

As a result, the Newcastle United player’s future will not be resolved until after England’s participation in Euro 2024 ends at the earliest.

It’s worth noting that Liverpool insist they never made any bid for Gordon, and currently consider themselves well-stocked at left-back with Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez still in their ranks.

However, that could of course change as the summer progresses as Barcelona continue to be heavily linked with a move for Diaz, himself a childhood fan of the La Liga giants. Although the Reds are not looking to sell the Colombian, the La Liga giants could set off a chain reaction if they test Liverpool’s resolve for the forward.

For the record, Diaz has previously insisted he is happy at Anfield and is currently only focused on his participation in the Copa America.

“I’m very happy there at Liverpool, it’s a great team and a great club,” he said Gol Caracol last month. “I’ve always wanted to play there, so I’m very happy and calm.

“I don’t think about anything else, I think about the Colombian national team, which is where we are.”

As a result, his future will not be decided one way or the other while Colombia remain in the continental tournament, having already secured their place in the quarter-finals with one group game to play.

Barcelona’s financial difficulties in recent years have been well documented, with the Catalans likely to need to raise funds by selling players if they are to finance a move for Diaz. Reports in Spain Last week they hinted they could sell Raphinha to Saudi side Al-Hilal and will demand at least €90m for his services.

The players’ representatives have reportedly been contacted, informing Raphinha’s camp that the contract on offer will far exceed his terms at Barcelona in an attempt to convince the reluctant Brazilian to move to the Middle East.

Like Diaz, Raphinha is still competing at the Copa America, with Brazil set to meet Colombia in their final group game on Tuesday night. Both teams could advance to the quarter-finals, with the Brazilians needing to win to steal the top spot.

Regardless of group position, Brazil and Colombia’s potential last eight matches are scheduled to take place on July 6. If both progress, they would meet again in the Copa America semi-final on July 10.

The tournament’s third-place play-off then takes place on July 13, before the final on July 14. As a result, barring a shock group stage exit for Brazil or a quarter-final exit for either nation, both Diaz and Raphinha are set to feature. be involved in the Copa America action until the end.

As a result, their futures will likely not be resolved for at least the duration of the tournament. And while Raphinha could fend off any attempts by Barcelona to sell him, the Catalans could still explore other avenues if they want to move for Diaz this summer.

In turn, Liverpool are unlikely to move for Gordon unless an exit for Diaz looks increasingly likely. While England’s participation in Euro 2024 could come to a premature end with Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Saturday, any rekindled transfer talks with Newcastle should probably remain on hold.

Also, if the Three Lions progress to a semi-final on July 10 or the final on July 14, Gordon’s future will remain unresolved until after Euro 2024, with the June 30 PSR deadline no longer forcing things. As a result, it remains a waiting game for players and clubs.

New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot is likely to want to speak to Diaz about his future intentions after his involvement in the Copa America. It remains to be seen whether such discussions would wait until after a three-week vacation, either until late July or early August.

Gordon is also likely to seek talks with Newcastle following their attempts to sell him in the first place – even if a move to Anfield would have been a dream move for the boyhood Red.

Only then will their respective transfer intentions become clear and movement on any such deals can be expected to resume.

Barcelona may have to move first, and of course in their own pursuit of Diaz, to trigger Liverpool into action. But international exploits ensure this is a transfer saga with many moving parts and one that won’t be definitively resolved anytime soon.
