Second World War shells removed from the River Don in Sheffield

A fisherman made an unexpected catch when he spotted a suspected WWII artillery shell while fishing in a river.

Police said the explosive discovery was made in the River Don, close to Ball Street in Sheffield, shortly before 4pm BST on Sunday.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the scene and carried out a controlled explosion of the device.

South Yorkshire Police said no injuries were reported, while a cordon put in place “for public safety” has since been lifted.
