Britain braced for ‘worrying’ wave of Covid this summer as people warned ‘don’t meet’

Britain is bracing for a “worrying” spike in Covid-19 this summer, with experts particularly concerned about the impact on the over-85s. A new variant, called FliRT – Fresh Lineage of Rapid Transmission – is expected to cause an increase in hospitalizations among this age group.

Professor Steve Griffin from the University of Leeds expressed concern: “It’s clearly early days, but it certainly looks like another wave of Covid is building. If the increase in hospitalizations continues, this is obviously worrying.”

Meanwhile, Professor Paul Hunter from the University of East Anglia offered a stark perspective: “To be honest, you can’t really avoid it because it’s so common. We will all have repeated Covid infections from birth to death. “

He also noted a decrease in the severity of the disease: “In general, what we’ve seen is that in the last three years, four years, the severity of the disease associated with Covid has decreased a lot. Eventually, it will become another. the cause of the common cold, and for many people, that is now.”

Hospital admissions rose to 3.31 per 100,000 people in the week ended June 16, up from 2.67 per 100,000 the previous week, with those aged 85 and over the most hospitalized group. The government is advising those who test positive to stay at home and avoid contact with others for five days, reports Birmingham Live.

To prevent the spread of Covid-19, people are advised not to come into contact with people who are likely to suffer serious illness, such as the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. “If you have symptoms of Covid-19 or the flu, help protect others by staying home and avoiding contact with other people, especially the most vulnerable,” said Dr. Jamie Lopez Bernal, consultant epidemiologist at the Agency UK Health Safety Authority (UKHSA).
