Man, 28, charged with multiple offenses following incident in Welford Road

A man has been charged with multiple offenses following an incident on Welford Road in Leicester. Dozens of emergency services were called to the scene, with the roads closed for almost 12 hours.

Leons Svans has been charged following the incident which began at around 4pm last Thursday (June 27) after a man climbed onto scaffolding at a construction site. It led to the closure of the road, as well as a number of neighboring streets, “in the interest of public safety”.

All closures were lifted in the early hours of Friday (June 28), with Leicestershire Police confirming they had then made an arrest. Svans, of no fixed abode, was later charged with three offenses by officers.

In a statement, the force said the 28-year-old was charged with: causing a danger to road users; possession of a knife blade/sharp object in a public place; and using threatening/abusive/insulting words with intent to cause fear of/provoke unlawful violence.

Svans appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (June 29). No pleas were entered during his hearing and he was remanded in custody before appearing at Leicester Crown Court later this year.
