The Leicester City transfer has been confirmed as the defender sold to Wrexham for Ryan Reynolds

Leicester City have sold defender Lewis Brunt to League One side Wrexham in their first transfer of the summer.

Brunt is leaving after three years at the King Power Stadium, not being too successful in making the jump to the first team. Arriving on a free transfer from Aston Villa, the centre-back won the Development Team Player of the Season in his first campaign at City and went on to make four senior appearances for the club, starting with FA Cup wins over Watford and Gillingham. and coming off the bench in the Premier League defeats to Tottenham and Nottingham Forest.

The 23-year-old spent last season on loan at Mansfield, performing well at the heart of the defense and in a deep-lying midfield role to help them earn promotion from League Two. But while the Stags were keen to make the move permanent, Brunt joined fellow League One side Wrexham instead.

Brunt joins the Welsh outfit as they prepare for their first season in the third tier for 20 years after back-to-back promotions. The club’s fame and reputation have grown in recent seasons after being taken over by American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, who produced the documentary Welcome to Wrexham about their journey in the league.

Although players have left City on free transfers this summer, this is the first deal the club have completed that includes a payment, with Brunt still under contract for another year. The fee is not disclosed, but it was apparently too much for Mansfield.

Their manager Nigel Clough said last month: “We made an offer which was rejected. Unfortunately, we may be too far off in terms of evaluating them and what we can pay. But we’re certainly not ruling it out and he remains our number one target.”
