Family message as ‘wonderful boy’, 14, missing from Crosby Beach

A 14-year-old boy who went missing in the Mersey near Crosby Beach has been named as his family shared their fears for him.

Emergency services were called to the beach at around 7pm on Sunday 30 June following reports of a missing teenager near the radar tower.

The appeal sparked a huge response from the police, fire and rescue services, coastguard and RNLI. The road to the radar tower was closed and police directed bystanders away from the area while the search continued.

The teenager, now named Daniel Halliday, has not been located and yesterday (July 1) the coastguard confirmed the search had been called off after 15 hours.

His family are being supported by specially trained Merseyside Police officers and in a statement have asked for privacy at this difficult time.

Their statement read: “Our greatest fear is that this tragic accident has taken the wonderful boy by our side. Daniel was jumping waves with his older brother who tried to save him but the current was too strong.

“Daniel is a loving son, brother, cousin, nephew and grandson.

“The family are all devastated and we hope we will be allowed our privacy at this time. Thank you.”
