Tom Heaton signs new one-year contract with Manchester United

Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract at Manchester United.

The 38-year-old rejoined United in 2021 after initially coming through the club’s academy before leaving without a first-team appearance in 2010 and operating as second-choice goalkeeper and the club’s third.

Heaton is currently training with the England squad, although not an official member or eligible for selection, at the European Championships in Germany. England face Switzerland in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

Since arriving in 2021, Heaton has played three times for United. He did not make a first-team appearance last season, his last outing in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Nottingham Forest in February 2023.

Heaton was primarily United’s third-choice goalkeeper in the 2023-24 campaign, with No.1 Andre Onana failing to make a single appearance during the season after arriving from Inter Milan in the summer. United signed Altay Bayindir as competition for the Cameroonian, but the Turkey international played just once, in the 4-2 FA Cup fourth round win over Newport County in January.

Heaton previously played for Burnley before returning to United, making 200 appearances for the Lancashire side in the Premier League and Championship.
