Former Wigan Athletic and Walsall goalkeeper Owen Evans is set to join Cheltenham Town

Cheltenham Town are set to re-sign goalkeeper Owen Evans following his departure from Walsall this summer.

The 27-year-old left the Robins to join the Saddlers in the summer of 2022.

He had joined Cheltenham from Wigan Athletic ahead of the 2021/22 League One campaign but lost his place to the experienced Scott Flinders towards the end of that season.

Former Wales Under-21 international Evans previously spent time on loan with Cheltenham in the second half of the 2019/20 season, saving a penalty in their play-off semi-final first leg win at Northampton Town. He was brought in to cover the injured Flinders, who suffered a broken leg.

Evans was coached during one season as a permanent player at Cheltenham by Dan Watson, who went on to be his goalkeeping coach at Walsall.

Evans is now set to return as Michael Flynn’s number one, with Joe Day expected to join in a player/coach role as Evans’ understudy.

Gloucestershire Live understands that Cheltenham are initially targeting a Championship loanee for the number one shirt, but that move appears to have fallen through.

The club’s only contracted goalkeeper Max Harris has been made available for transfer, while goalkeeping coach James Bittner is leaving for a job in League One, making way for Day, who worked with Flynn at Newport County AFC.
