10 Liverpool players have officially left the club as Arne Slot ushers in a new era

Anfield has officially said goodbye to ten players whose contracts have expired as the Arne Slot era begins with Thiago being one of the notable departures.

Liverpool have already announced that a group of players, all out of contract until the end of June, will be leaving the club. Slot, taking over from Jurgen Klopp, now assesses the squad he inherited.

Thiago, who joined from Bayern Munich in 2020, was let go following an injury-plagued spell at Anfield. Despite showing flashes of his talent, the Spanish midfielder has consistently failed to live up to the high expectations set for him.

Joel Matip is another important player to leave. A key figure in Liverpool’s 2019 Champions League triumph, Matip has often been sidelined through injury, just like Thiago.

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his hope that Matip will be offered a new contract in recognition of his service. “I’m pretty sure the club will show their class, as they should,” he said.

“I’m pretty sure they’ve already told Joel whatever happens, as long as he’s injured everything’s fine, and now we have to make a decision with Joel about what he’s going to look like after that.

“It’s a normal thing to do, but he deserves all the support from us and he will get it. I would say yes (that he deserves a new deal), but it’s not my decision. I can’t sign the papers.”
