Leeds Rhinos: 5 new head coaching candidates as club expands search

Leeds Rhinos are still without a head coach despite expectations from many that they will use the international break to find a replacement for Rohan Smith.

Early favorites for the job, Paul Rowley and Brad Arthur, appear to be out of contention now, with Salford boss Rowley firm in his stance that he will stay to see out the project which, meanwhile, Brad Arthur initially looks set to a giant. job.

According to reports below, Arthur has been approached and interviewed for the head coaching role of the potential Perth expansion team, which could see him off the Rhinos radar.

That Perth job won’t be until 2027 or later, which leaves some hope for Leeds Rhinos, who have interviewed the Aussie, but with talks finally over, we’ve assessed five possible external candidates who could take the job.

Earlier this week, sporting director Ian Blease informed her Yorkshire Evening Post that the club have been active in their pursuit, with Blease working through “high caliber candidates in the coming week”.

We looked at who some of these men might be.

Leeds Rhinos Quiz: Can you name these former Super League players? #2

Five outsiders for the Leeds Rhinos job

Jason Demetriou

Former South Sydney Rabbitohs head coach Jason Demetriou is among the most prominent coaches out of a job at the moment, with the former Wakefield Trinity man sacked earlier this season.

He is set to be replaced by Wayne Bennett, but Demetriou was a name linked with the Hull FC job and given his Super League connections, it would make sense for him to be interested in the Leeds Rhinos job.

Justin Holbrook

Former St Helens head coach Justin Holbrook was sacked by the Gold Coast Titans in 2023, much to the shock of many fans, but made a quick move to join Trent Robinson and serve as an assistant to the Roosters, however , a major club like Leeds Rhinos could tempt. him to return to the Super League.

What would make Holbrook’s move more difficult is the fact that he is the current head coach of Papua New Guinea, however, this is expected to change following reports that he will replace Adrian Lam as Australia’s assistant. Perhaps taking on an assistant role in the international game means he could more easily balance a Super League coaching role?

Justin Morgan

Another name that will be familiar to Super League fans is Justin Morgan, the Wales international who went on to coach Hull KR from 2005 to 2011, helping the Robins to promotion to Super League in 2007.

Since leaving the English game, Morgan has taken on a number of assistant coaching roles including the New Zealand national team, Canberra Raiders, Melbourne Storm New Zealand Warriors and currently the North Queensland Cowboys. After over a decade in the realm of head coaching, perhaps Headingley’s influence could persuade him to return.

Dean Young

Young is the only name on this list who hasn’t had a Super League connection with the St George Illawarra Dragons assistant, who has spent his entire playing and coaching career down under. The 40-year-old spent his entire playing career with the Dragons, making more than 200 appearances, before taking over the club’s junior teams.

He went on to become a first-team assistant and even served as interim head coach during which he made the infamous “same s**t, different day” remark in a presser after a loss to the Cowboys. He would then leave to join the Cowboys before returning back to St George, where he remains today. If Leeds Rhinos want to gamble again, as they did with Rohan Smith, then Dean Young could be the man.

Ryan Carr

Former Featherstone Rovers boss Ryan Carr completes that shortlist and is the youngest of any candidate at just 35. Coincidentally, he coached 35 matches as head coach of Fev during the 2019 season where he took the club to the Million Pound Game. The loss to the Toronto Wolfpack served as the final game, with Carr leaving to return to Australia afterwards.

He has since coached NSW Cup side Parramatta Eels and under Leeds Rhinos target Brad Arthur for the first team. He will take over from the St George Illawarra Dragons following the sacking of Anthony Griffin, coaching 12 games in the 2023 season.
