Wigan insist a final decision on the takeover proposal has yet to be made by the EFL

Wigan’s administrators insist a final decision on a proposed takeover of the club has not been made by the English Football League.

On Friday, the league’s governing body confirmed it was “not yet in a position to accept a request to transfer the membership of the EFL to the proposed purchasers”.

He felt the league’s demands had not been met, despite Latics administrators Begbies Traynor reaching an agreement with a preferred bidder from Spain in September.

A “substantial deposit” was handed over, but after agreeing to extend the November 11 deadline, the EFL said on Friday that its “requirements were not met” following further checks.

“We have not yet had a final decision from the EFL regarding the transfer of the football quota,” Wigan’s joint administrators said in a statement on Monday.

“Both the bidders and we, together with our legal team, have had regular and ongoing discussions with the EFL regarding their requirements.

“The exclusivity agreement with the bidders, which expires on November 11, has been extended for an additional period to try to reach a satisfactory conclusion.

“At this stage we cannot say when that will be as it is up to the EFL.

“Whilst we fully understand the fans’ frustration and the overall effect on the club, we must adhere to established procedures to be successful.”

On Friday, the EFL said: “At Thursday’s meeting, the EFL Board received an update and fully considered the latest position regarding the ongoing discussions relating to the sale of Wigan Athletic’s assets.

“In recent weeks, the EFL has undertaken significant due diligence on the relevant parties in accordance with its regulations and, based on the information that has been made available, the Board has confirmed that it is unable to accept an application for a transfer of membership. EFL to the proposed buyers as the League’s requirements were not met.

“The board reiterated its commitment to working with the trustees to secure a successful and sustainable future for the club and will meet with them to discuss the implications of this decision as soon as possible.”

Wigan administrators have also confirmed that the sale of the Sharpy’s restaurant site has been completed.

Latics were handed a 12-point deduction by the EFL for going into administration in July and the club were subsequently relegated to Sky Bet League One.

An original deadline for the sale of August 31 was missed, but the club have been given permission by the EFL to begin their campaign in the third tier and are currently bottom of the table, five points from safety.
