An important Leeds United transfer update emerges –

Leeds United will have to pay an extra fee to Tottenham Hotspur for Joe Rodon if they secure promotion to the Premier League, according to TEAMtalk.

The Whites announced they had brought in the Wales international on a permanent deal for a fee expected to be in the region of £10m this afternoon. Rodon spent last season on loan at Elland Road in a move that revitalized his career.

After impressing at Swansea City, he signed for Spurs in 2020. However, his spell in north London proved to be a major disappointment, where he made just 24 appearances in all competitions.

A loan spell at French outfit Stade Rennais was cut short by injury during the 2022/23 campaign, but his obvious talent shone through in Yorkshire. He was an ever-present at the heart of Daniel Farke’s defence, featuring 50 times. Disappointment in the play-off final against Southampton meant that Leeds would be forced to play another season of Championship football, leading to speculation that the centre-back could secure a move to the Premier League.

An important Leeds United transfer update emerges –

The situation took a turn this week thanks to the saga involving Archie Gray. Brentford looked to have won the race for the teenager at the weekend, although Tottenham came late to land a £40million deal. This allowed conversations to take place between the two clubs involving Rodon and a deal was struck.

The former Cheltenham Town loanee has now joined Leeds on a four-year deal. Reports earlier this year stated that Spurs were hoping to capitalize on his good form by recouping the £15m they paid Swansea for him, but it appears they would have been willing to accept a bit of a hit on their valuation .

It has now been claimed that a clause has been inserted into the deal which will see Ange Postecoglou’s side receive an additional fee if Leeds are promoted at any stage during his four-year stay in Yorkshire.

Gray’s departure could be the first of many this summer, with Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto both linked with moves away from the club.

The writer’s vision

This is a clever clause that suits Leeds. They may still have to meet Tottenham’s initial assessment, but they will only do so if they win promotion. By doing so, they will see their income rise, meaning they will be in a better position to afford the difference. Although there is no indication of the fee he would have to pay, but it can be assumed that it is seven figures.

For Rodon, the move could see him build on the excellent campaign he had at Elland Road last season. He can play a key role in their push for a top-two finish, where he will be one of the favorites to win promotion.
