England hit by growing medieval disease, doctor says ‘passed easily’

Britain is facing a surge in cases of the medieval disease which has hit an all-time high – as a leading doctor issued a stark warning. According to the latest statistics, there has been an increase in sexually transmitted diseases, gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea sufferers experience painful symptoms and a noticeable yellow or green discharge. There was a 7.5% increase in cases in England from 2022 to 2023, according to figures published by the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA), MirrorOnline reports.

This increased from 79,268 cases to 85,223. This marks the highest figure since data collection began. And between 2021 and 2022, the UK saw a 50.3% jump in diagnoses. Cases rose from 82,592.

This was the most significant number of diagnoses recorded in any year since 1918, with some of the increase due to a wider increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England. There were 401,800 new STI diagnoses in 2023 alone, up 4.7% from the previous year.

Dr Bhavini Shah, sexual health guru and GP at LloydsPharmacy Online Doctor, has sounded the alarm about the importance of safe sex practices. She warns: “Anyone who is sexually active can get gonorrhea. But you’re particularly at risk if you regularly change sexual partners or don’t use proper contraceptive methods, such as condoms, when you have sex.

“Gonorrhea is easily transmitted between people through unprotected vaginal, anal and oral sex and by sharing vibrators and other sex toys. It can be prevented by barrier contraceptive methods. This means using condoms or dental dams (a square of used latex or plastic). in oral sex). You should also wash and cover sex toys with a new condom when you share them.”
