Driver arrested after Birmingham crash for allegedly trying to ‘take control’ of soldiers’ vehicle

One person is in custody after allegedly trying to “take control” of an Alabama State Trooper cruiser during a wreck investigation in east Birmingham.

Just before 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, a state trooper observed a two-vehicle crash blocking the road in the 1700 block of Tallapoosa Street.

Senior military officer Vu Quang said that while the policeman was investigating the accident, one of the drivers involved in the wreck “took control of the patrol vehicle”.

Quang said the officer was able to stop the suspect, who was taken into custody and then taken to UAB Hospital for evaluation. The officer was also taken to UAB Hospital for evaluation.

Authorities declined to comment on the nature of the possible injuries and said no additional information was being released.

Witnesses reported seeing the officer and a man in an altercation on the roadway and said a stun gun was used on the suspect. Authorities have not confirmed these accounts.

Birmingham Police and Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service responded and attended the incident.

Criminal charges are pending against the suspect as the investigation continues.
